Orders for Graduation Materials Must Arrive By:

The 2009 Graduation Order Form Will Be Available By April, 2009

Important information:

Requests for honors must be submitted on the ASLHS Graduation Order Form and arrive by the posted deadlines. Only the sponsor of the ASLHS chapter may request honors materials. Payment must accompany the order or materials will not be delivered. Click here for the 2008 Graduation Order Form, and here for guidance on computing GPA. Only schools with an ASLHS chapter on campus are eligible to award graduation recognition materials.

The American Sign Language Honor Society recognizes outstanding academic achievement in ASL studies with three honors:

  • Honor cords
  • Alice Cogswell Medal
  • Laurent Clerc Medal
To receive one or more of the honors, students must meet the minimum eligibility requirements for each, which includes both GPA and community service hours. For any honors to be conferred, a student must attend a campus with an active ASLHS chapter and have a sponsor is in good standing with the American Sign Language Teacher's Association. For purposes of grade point average computation, eligible ASL coursework includes ASL language, ASL literature, and Deaf studies. Interpretation coursework is not eligible.


Descriptions of honors & eligibility requirements:

Honor Cords
Honor cords may be worn at graduation
or induction ceremonies if the student meets these eligibility requirements:

   a. Is a student at a high school, senior  
       high school, or other secondary 
       institution;
   b. Has studied ASL for at least two 
       years;
   c. Possesses an overall grade point
       average of 3.5 / B+ in his / her ASL 
       coursework;
   d. Possesses an overall grade point 
       average of 3.2 / B in all other 
       subjects;
   e. Completion of at least five (5) hours of
       community service that benefits the  
       Deaf community.

Alice Cogswell Medal

The Alice Cogswell Medal may be worn at graduation or induction ceremonies if the student meets these eligibility requirements:

   a. Is a student at a community 
       college or 4-year college
       university;
   b. Has studied ASL for at least  
       two
years;
   c. Possesses an overall grade 
       point average of 3.5 / B+ in his /
       her ASL coursework;
   d. Possesses an overall grade
       point average of 3.2 in all other
       subjects;
   e. Completion of at least five (5)
       hours of community service that
       benefits the Deaf community.

Please note: The Alice Cogswell Medal is available only to community college or 4-year college / university students.


Laurent Clerc Medal

 The Laurent Clerc Medal is the only ASLHS honor open to ASL students at both the high school and college levels if the following eligibility requirements are met:

   a. Is a high school  or  college 
       student;
   b. Has studied ASL for at least
       three
years;
   c. Possesses an overall grade point
       average of 3.7 / A- in his / her
       ASL coursework;
   d. Possesses an overall grade point
       average of 3.5 / B+ in all other
       subjects;
   e. Completion of at least ten (10)  
       hours of community service that
       benefits the Deaf community.

Please note: The Laurent Clerc Medal is available to both high school and college students.
